Used Business Phones
Yes, it's true that used business phones are much cheaper than new phone systems. Used business phones can be sold anywhere from 30-70% off retail price, depending on where you buy the phone. Is it really worth it? Should you just save the money now and buy a new phone later? Alternatively, would buying used business phones be a shrewd way of saving money in an unstable economy?
There is no definite answer here. It mainly depends upon your own needs and your provider for used electronics. Some stores always sell quality electronics, even if they are used or refurbished. If you walk into a pawnshop and see a used phone system for $20 then you are essentially getting what you pay for. The system might work fine or it might break down the next day. This is just a risk you take when you buy merchandise that is unusually cheap. Merchandise that is midway between retail price and suspiciously cheap is generally more reliable, as the store is able to afford a limited term refund or exchange if the product breaks down.
The next point to consider is whether you want to buy used business phones or refurbished business phones. What's the difference? Used business phones have been used repeatedly and continue to be in good working condition, hence the store is confident enough to sell it. However, used telephone systems from individuals or lower-end stores may not be as reliable or come with any type of warranty. With used products, you always have to wonder, since every product inevitably stops working eventually, how long before this consistently-used product finally gives out?
Refurbished used business phones are in a slightly different category. These phone systems were not repeatedly used over a period of time. Rather, they have a mechanical or aesthetic defect and were repaired to be sold "as good as new." This term usually indicates the product was returned to the manufacturer because of a complaint. The manufacturers analyze the product, fix it as best as possible, and then return it to the market for a discounted price.
Legally, refurbished used business phones cannot be sold as "new products"; hence, they have a special designation. Not all refurbished phones are former "lemons." Keep in mind that some customers will return products for a variety of reasons, such as not liking the color or simply changing his/her mind about wanting the product. This should give you a better feeling of refurbished or used business phones.
